Glossary

A

Adventure - n. A preset that requires extensive map exploration to find all of the relics needed to win.

Aperture - n. A preset which makes significant changes to routing through opening shortcuts, warps, and changing map geometry.

B

Bat-Dash - n. An action of transforming into bat during the back-dash animation to preserve the momentum during the transformation.

Beyond - n. A high-complexity preset designed around a complete redesign of various items.

Bizhawk - n. An emulator suite for various gaming systems that allows for scripting and code injection.

Blind Bat - n. Any of several strategies that use Bat to traverse the "Dark Spike Room" in the Catacombs.

C

Casual - n. A preset designed with low complexity. 

Chain of Complexity - n. The seed-dependent intended route to the Complexity Vlad, or the last relic in the chain to complete the game.

Complexity - n. The number of relics required to get to another relic. Typically refers to the number of relics needed to access the Vlad Relic buried deepest by the Randomizer.

Complexity Chain - n. See: Chain of Complexity

Complexity Relic - n. The relic that has the most relics leading to its acquisition within the preset logic.

Complexity Ring- n. One of the two rings (Gold Ring, Silver Ring) required to access the Holy Glasses location in the first castle; notably the ring that is within the intended complexity chain.

Complexity Vlad - n. The Vlad Relic that has the most relics leading to its acquisition within the preset logic.

Creature - n. Also known as Frankenstein's Monster, one of the bosses of SOTN that guards a Vlad Relic in the original game

D

Damage Stacks - n. The act of using two attacks that cause a minor glitch where they duplicate their damage capabilities inflicting massive damage to the enemy.

Dark Wolf - n. A technique using exploits of Wolf mechanics combined with invincibility frames to traverse the "Dark Spike Room" in the Catacombs.

Dive-Bat - n. An action taken by transforming into bat immediately after starting a forward dive-kick to preserve forward momentum during the transformation.

E

Empty hand - n. An April Fools preset designed to be experienced rather than described.

Expedition - n. A preset that combines elements of Nimble with those of Adventure while also adding several quality of life features.

Exploit - n. Utilizing an intended mechanic or property within the game for an unintended purpose. Notable examples: I-Frame Abuse, Air-State Reset.

Final Vlad - n. See: Complexity Vlad

G

Gem Farmer - n. An April Fools preset designed to be experienced rather than described.

Glasses - n. abbr. Holy Glasses

Glitch 1  - n. An unintended effect of a mechanic exploited to break the game's mechanics or code. Notable examples: Vial Stacks, MP Refill Glitch, Reverse Shift Line

Glitch 2 - n. A preset based around the player understanding complex glitches and movement mechanics to complete.

Grav-Bat - n. An action taken by transforming into bat immediately after starting a diagonal gravity jump to preserve forward momentum during the transformation.

Guarded O.G. - n. A preset much like O.G. but it uses Guarded relic extension instead of Classic.

H

Hard count - n. the complexity level a player is 100% on right now (not realistic to count all the time.)

HG - n. abbr. Holy Glasses

I

I-Frame - n. abbr. "I" stands for Invincibility. Invincibility Frames are statuses granted by various game mechanics that make the player character impossible to damage.

In Logic - adj. Used to describe when access to a check or relic is intended by the preset logic.

Infinite Wing Smash - n. A technique used to chain together instances of the Bat's Wing Smash technique to make Alucard move fast indefinitely through a lateral or diagonal space.

Item Stat Randomization - n. A mode for the Randomizer that randomizes the effects and damage values for the items in the game. Example: You can have weapon named Estoc with Masamune's attack value, Zwei hander's sprite, Flamberge's description and entity when used, and a random palette applied to the sprite to make it green.

IWS - n. abbr. See: Infinite Wing Smash

L

LBC - n. abbr. A Library card, an item in the game which can teleport you to the Long Library zone right in front of the game's merchant: The Librarian.

Left Side - Taking the left path in the second castle. This route typically consists of moving through the rooms with Darkwing Bat to Reverse Outer Wall, then through Black Marble Gallery to Reverse Caverns.

Leg Day - n. A mid-complexity preset based on back-dash movement and infinite mid-air leaps.

Logic - n. The randomizer uses logic to determine what is and is not possible for completion of a seed. Logic ensures that the seed will not result in a game experience which cannot be completed.

Long Library, The 1 - A zone in the game connected only to the Outer Wall which contains many important locations such as the Librarian's Shop and the location for Soul of Bat.

Long Library, The 2 - The Discord for SOTN and the Randomizer named after the zone in the game.

Lycan - n. abbr. Lycanthrope preset

Lycanthrope - n. A preset designed around wolf movement and gear granting intelligence.

M

Maria'd - vt. Having Maria come and save you in the prologue against Dracula.

Mouse - n. abbr. 3snow_p7im (See: Wild Mouse)

MP Refill Glitch - n. A minor glitch that will occasionally fully refill Alucard's mana during screen freezes.

N

Nimble - n. A preset designed around providing many of the movement relics to make traversing the castle much faster.

O

O.G. - n. A Preset designed around using the original classic relic extension and low complexity. Represents how the randomizer started.

OOL - adj.  abbr. See: Out of Logic

Orphan - vt. Skipping a relic / equipment check.

Out of Logic - adj. Going somewhere not intended by the rules of the preset, typically to gain an advantage or bonus early on.

Preset - n. A particular set of rules, determined by the user, given to the randomizer to determine where to place items and relics and other custom changes.

Progression - n. See: Progression Relic

Progression relic - n. Relic that generally increases your ability to progress in the game (Includes progression items)

Q

R

Race - n. The act of two or more players competing in individual runs using the same seed and starting at the same time.

Rando - n. abbr. Randomizer / Randomization.

Rando Tools - n. A set of tools for use with a randomized seed; implemented in conjunction with Bizhawk.

Random Ring - n. One of the two rings (Gold Ring, Silver Ring) required to access the Holy Glasses location in the first castle; notably the ring that is not within the intended complexity chain.

Random Vlad - n. A VLad Relic that is not within the intended complexity chain for a seed.

Rat race - n. An April Fools preset designed to be experienced rather than described.

Reverse Library Card - n. A function added to the Library card item that allows the player to teleport to the Forbidden Library zone in the second castle.

Richard - n. A Skeleton.

Right Side - Taking the right path in the second castle. This typically consists of moving through the rooms containing Medusa, Deathwing's Lair, Reverse Colosseum, and Beelzebub.

RLBC - n. abbr. See: Reverse Library Card

Run - n. An instance of playing a randomized seed or doing a speed run.

Runback - n. Any race beyond the first in a series.

S

Safe - n. A preset designed with high complexity.

Save Split - n. A technique where a player saves the game, then proceeds to a check location in a castle and, if they don't want to lose time by returning from that check, they can soft reset and load their save.

Scavenger - n. An April Fools preset designed to be experienced rather than described.

Seed - n. An initial starting value used by the Randomizer to generate a given randomization of the game. They can be shared, along with the options used, to generate a similar experience for multiple players.

Setz - n. The creator of SotN-Relic-Randomizer; the basis for the first version of the SOTN Randomizer

Soft count - n. The player's best guess on what the progression count (by layers) is.

SOTN - n. abbr. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Speedrun 1 - n. The act of trying to complete a game as fast as possible.

Speedrun 2 - n. A preset designed for players who know speedrun level movement techniques.

Spoilers - n. The written or stated solution to the seed provided by the randomizer or another player.

Stats - n. pl. abbr. Short for statuses. Values and properties assigned to Alucard or equipment that modify how they behave and the amount of damage dealt / mitigated.

T

Third Castle 1 - n. Refers to a section of the Outer Wall, using the Reverse Outer Wall tile set, accessible only by using glitches to escape Reverse Caverns.

Third castle 2 - n. An April Fools preset designed to be experienced rather than described.

Tin Man 1 - n. An enemy in the Forbidden Library zone of the Inverted Castle notable for it's high defense and high damage, but low hit points.

TinMan 2 - n. The name of the bot used in the Long Library Discord to manage randomizer races named after the enemy in the Forbidden Library.

U

V

Vanilla - adj. Refers to an item being at its original location in the base game after randomization.

Varda - n. An accessory item named Ring of Varda which boosts the players stats significantly.

Vial Stack - n. A minor glitch that involves using Monster Vials in conjunction with another item which replaces the Monster Vial's hit box properties with the properties of the other item. This can be done with food, one-handed weapon specials, and consumable items including bombs. Typically this is done with bombs and most famously with Power of Sire which allows Alucard access to damage stacks.

Vlad - n. abbr. A Vlad Relic.

Vlad Relic - n. Piece of Vlad. Ring of Vlad, Heart of Vlad, Tooth (Nail) of Vlad, Eye of Vlad,  Rib of Vlad are all "Vlad Relics", all five of which are needed to open the end of the game.

W

Warlock - n. A preset designed around Form of Mist and significant spell use.

Wild Mouse - n. 3snow_p7im, the predominant creator of the Symphony of the Night Randomizer.

Wing Smash - n. A technique used to make bat move extremely fast laterally. Can be directed up or down during the technique and can also be chained to create Infinite Wing Smash.

WS - n. abbr. See: Wing Smash

Xorlo - n. Sword Familiar

Z

Zip - n. An occurrence when the player character enters a group of solid map tiles pushing them in a direction extremely quickly. In SOTN this means the character is pushed down.

Zone - n. A section of the castle distinguished by a theme or designated name visible via the save rooms in each zone.
